EDMONTON — In what officials are calling a bold modernization of supports, the Government of Alberta confirmed this week that some recipients of Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped will be transitioned to the new Alberta Disability Assistance Program on July 1, a move the province insists is an upgrade, despite being unable to name a single thing that improves.

"This is about meeting people where they are," said a ministry spokesperson, gesturing at a slide that showed an arrow pointing from one acronym to a slightly shorter acronym. "AISH had four letters. ADAP also has four letters. We've preserved everything that matters."

Disability advocates, who have spent months raising concerns through every channel the province provided, reported that the consultation process was extensive and the outcome was unaffected by it. "We heard the concerns, we read the concerns, and then we proceeded exactly as planned, which is itself a kind of listening," the spokesperson clarified, adding that a feedback form would remain open until precisely one minute after the decision became irreversible.

Pressed on whether benefit levels, eligibility, or indexing would change under the new program, officials said details would be released "in the fullness of time," a phrase the ministry has now used in seventeen separate briefings. Recipients seeking clarity were directed to a hotline that plays a recorded message describing the importance of clarity.

Municipal social-service agencies, which will absorb the people the new program quietly leaves behind, said they were grateful to be informed of the transition by reading about it in the newspaper. "Nothing says provincial leadership like a responsibility arriving at your front desk with no funding attached," said one city caseworker, updating a spreadsheet titled 'Things The Province Says Are Fine.'

At press time, the government had announced a sleek new program name, a refreshed colour palette, and a commitment to ensuring that no Albertan would be worse off, provided no one checked.
