Following the announcement of Canada's 26-player World Cup roster headlined by Edmonton-raised superstar Alphonso Davies, the Government of Alberta moved swiftly on Friday to take full credit for an athlete it spent the last several years defunding the developmental pathway of.

"Alphonso Davies is a shining example of what hard work and Alberta values can achieve," said the Minister of Education in a statement issued from a press conference held, for reasons no one could explain, inside a school library that has not employed a librarian since 2021. "This is the kind of homegrown excellence our public system is uniquely positioned to produce."

The province declined to comment on the fact that Davies developed his skills through community and school programs of a type now operating with frozen funding, larger class sizes, and a recess-supervision model the minister himself once described as "voluntary in spirit." When asked whether the current system could produce another Davies, officials confirmed it could, provided the next one supplied his own ball, net, coach, gymnasium, and second teacher.

"We're investing in the athletes of tomorrow," the minister continued, gesturing toward a banner reading Alberta: Home of Champions, which sources confirmed cost more than the entire physical education budget of the school behind it. The banner was purchased, the government noted, "as an inspirational measure."

Edmonton Public Schools, where Davies played as a youth, said it was thrilled to see a former student succeed, and gently reminded the province that the program he came through is currently being run by a single overextended teacher who also coaches three other sports, teaches social studies, and has been told to consider the gymnasium a "flexible learning environment" now that part of the roof leaks.

At press time, the Premier had announced a new provincial strategy to "identify and nurture the next generation of Alberta talent," to be funded entirely by reallocating money from the programs that identify and nurture the next generation of Alberta talent.
